Bizen, Japan

One of the six ancient kilns of Japan, Bizen ceramics have a history dating back 1000 years, yet techniques and traditions have continued on till today.

And this September, we’ll be heading over to Bizen, Japan for a month to learn and experience it for ourselves.

With that, we will be taking in a limited number of preorders for pieces that will be made and fired in Bizen personally by Amber and I.

Why Bizen?

The allure of Bizen ware can only be truly appreciated up close, characterised by its earthly brown-red tones. Mostly unglazed, the magic only happens during the week long firing, where the pieces get their unique colours and patterns from both the firing techniques and wood ash.

We love how Bizen ware has a depth to it that is striking, considering how each piece is born purely through a simple combination of wood, fire, and and clay. These three gifts of nature come together to produce a beautiful marriage, and every piece of Bizen ware carries with it a touch of unpredictability from the wood firing – nature’s finishing touches.

Preorder

We have 3 sets that we will be taking preorders for; a combination of pieces made by both Amber and Keneth. The pieces included in each set will be a mystery combination of pieces made by us during our time in Bizen, which will be allocated at random for each order.

The actual products you receive may vary in finish, size, and form based on what we make, so be prepared for a surprise!

Expected date of delivery is Early Nov 23.

About Us

Emberspottery / IG

Hi, I’m Amber from Emberspottery. I started pottery 2 years ago during the pandemic and quickly fell in love with the wonderful feeling of being able to turn a lump of unassuming clay beneath my hands into almost any kind of functional object that we can use. My works are mainly functional pieces, ranging from tableware to sake and teaware. I tend to make pieces with simple, clean silhouettes, with an emphasis on functionality. Since I lived in Japan for quite some time, I also have a soft spot for Japanese ceramics, which often have a subdued elegance that is common to the Japanese aesthetic.

Keneth / IG

Hi I’m Keneth, a photographer turned potter and ceramicist based in Singapore. I make functional and daily ware, with emphasis on simplicity and my style of ceramics is greatly influenced by traditional Japanese and Korean ceramic styles. Shigaraki and Bizen ware has always been one of my favourites, with its unglazed and wood fired effects that are unique and distinctive. I combine my values and approach of my 10 years in photography to the craftsmanship of my ceramics, producing works that are understated and pieces that can withstand the test of time.

We’re extremely excited to have the opportunity to travel and learn in Bizen, and we can’t wait to share the beauty of Bizen ware with you. This collaboration between us will also be a distillation of our experiences and takeaways from this trip into tangible, functional objects for your daily use, and we hope the finished pieces will be as meaningful to you as they are to us.
